Description

This is somehow the result of 13 useable light frames I managed to collect during the about only useable hour of sky that I have seen for the entire month of July so far. The Trifid nebula is one of my two favorite DSO's and I've been waiting for almost a year to be able to image it, so this summer has been frustrating. My setup conveniently frames both the Lagoon and Trifid almost perfectly together.

These targets are quite low in the south horizon for me in the most light-polluted direction - last night, I measured 18.5-sqm at zenith, but 17.7-sqm at their orientation, so it's really quite severe. This was also in very hot, humid conditions (~25C) with definite haze in the air so much that the guide camera lost tracking a couple times. I think that my polar alignment must have been good enough that star trailing wasn't too bad at three minutes on the frames the guiding dropped out.

Definitely a struggle to get anything useable, so I am really quite happy that I managed to salvage any decent image with so little integration time and generally poor imaging conditions. I'd love to have a chance to do better with Trifid, but this might be the best I can do on it for now....
